the "Knitwear capital" of India is located in the south Indain state Tamil Nadu. Tirupur has gained universal recognition as the leading source of Hosiery, Knitted Garments, Casual Wear and Sportswear. It is situated 58 kilometres east of Coimbatore and about 495 km south west of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the fastest developing cities in Tamil Nadu. Tirupur is the sixth largest city in Tamil Nadu. It is quite a congested city, although public authorities are undertaking steps to upgrade all means of public transportation, The city is known for its hosiery exports and provides employment for about 6 lakh people (about 6,00,000). 56% of India's total knitwear exports come from Tirupur. This has
been recognized in the Export Import Policy, 2002-07 of Government of
India which conferred the status of "Town of Export Excellence" to Tirupur. The population of Tirupur and surrounding villages is around 12,00,000. The nearest domestic airport is in Coimbatore(about 38 km away). The nearest international airports are Kochi, Bangalore and Chennai airports. Difficulty is experienced by the exporters due to the many rules, but they are trying to work through it.But the modern machinery used and the availability of skillful labour enabled this city to prosper and be competitive internationally. There are also many players who are establishing their own brands and retailing concepts for example t-mart by pgc " an upper, mid middle class family concept"; and local brands like lux, dixie, vip who cater the under garment market. In the last 20 years many people from southern district & small percentage from kerela had settelled as workers & other trades.rnrnThe land mark of Tirupur are Noyyal river diving the city into two halves of North & south, The railway bridge over railway station, Tirupur Kumaran memorial statue near railway station are some of the famous places of Tirupur area.
